Advanced Onboarding Guide

Advanced device onboarding guide

If you are beginning with a new ExtremeCloud IQ account, you must first select whether you want to use the trial version, Pilot version, or Connect version. When you select your subscription level you can begin onboarding your devices.

Cloud Management or Local Management?

To onboard your devices efficiently, you must plan how you intend to manage the devices and which device operating systems to use.

Cloud-managed vs. Locally Managed Devices

Any discussion of whether a device is cloud-managed or locally managed begins by defining what can be managed in the cloud.

Cloud-enabled Devices

In this context, the term cloud-enabled refers to devices that can be managed by the cloud-based ExtremeCloud IQ. ExtremeCloud IQ can manage any device with which it can communicate directly on the management plane. This include devices that run IQ Engine and can communicate with ExtremeCloud IQ natively, and to devices that run IQAgent, which allows non-natively cloud-enabled devices to communicate with ExtremeCloud IQ.

Devices that are not running IQ Engine or IQAgent are not cloud-capable and ExtremeCloud IQ cannot manage them. However, ExtremeCloud IQ can keep a record of them in its database.

Cloud-managed Devices

Cloud-managed devices maintain communication with ExtremeCloud IQ. The cloud-managed device sends data to ExtremeCloud IQ and ExtremeCloud IQ uploads configuration changes to the device.

You are not limited to managing cloud-enabled devices only in ExtremeCloud IQ. You can choose to manage cloud-capable devices locally. For example, if you have an existing management platform, you can use it to manage cloud-enabled Extreme Networks devices.

Locally Managed Devices

Locally managed devices are devices of which ExtremeCloud IQ maintains a record, but that are managed by another platform, such as IQ Virtual Appliance, an Extreme Controller, or a third party management platform. Locally managed devices can appear in the ExtremeCloud IQ devices list, but you cannot perform any management tasks on them, such as updating the configuration or changing the operating system.

Step 1: Select Management Architecture

Select whether you are onboarding cloud-managed devices or locally managed devices.

If you are onboarding cloud-manageable devices and intend to use ExtremeCloud IQ to manage them, then select Deploy your devices directly to the cloud.

If you are onboarding cloud-manageable devices, but intend to use a different management platform, or if you are onboarding devices that are not cloud-manageable, then select Deploy your devices locally.

Step 2: Assign Location

If you choose to deploy your devices to the cloud, then the next step is to assign locations. To assign a location to the devices you want to onboard, select Create and select locations.

Create Your Organization

  1. Enter a name for your organization, such as your company name.

  2. Select your country from the drop-down list, and then select Save Organization.

  3. Select Next: Location.

Create Your Location

  1. Enter the name of your location, such as a city, region, or district.

  2. If you plan to provide outdoor wireless coverage, turn Will there be outdoor coverage on.

  3. From the drop-down list, select the organization with which this location is associated.

  4. Select Save Location.

  5. You can continue to create additional locations or select Next: Building to continue.

Create Your Building

  1. Enter the name of your building in the first line of the form. You can use any name, but it is common to use either the name of your building if it is a named structure, or a functional name, such as Headquarters.

  2. Enter the building address. As you enter the address, a forward lookup of addresses displays.

  3. From the drop-down list, select the location with which this building is associated.

  4. Select Save Building.

Create a Floor

  1. In the first line of the form, enter a name for the floor in the building. It is common to name the floors by their floor number, but you can enter a name based on your internal naming systems.

  2. From the drop-down list, select the building with which this floor is associated.

  3. Choose one of the following from the Environment drop-down list:

  1. Enter the floor attenuation in dB (default: 15 dB).

  2. Enter the height of the installation and select the measurement units (default: 12 feet).

  3. Enter the map size and the measurement units (default: 12 x 12 feet).

  4. Select your floor plan image. You can select an image from your library of previously uploaded images, or you can upload a new image.

  5. Select Save Floor.

Step 3: Onboard Devices

  1. Choose the device type.

Real: Real devices are devices that you can physically deploy, connect to the network, and use to service client devices.

Simulated: Simulated devices are logical devices that you can use in planning and testing concepts and ideas, but that you cannot use to service clients, collect data, or perform background scanning.

  1. Select whether you want to enter serial numbers manually or using a CSV file.

Enter manually: Select to enter one or multiple serial numbers manually, separated by commas.

If you are entering multiple serial numbers, you must ensure the following:

  • The serial numbers are correct.

  • The serial numbers are separated by commas.

  • The serial numbers are for devices that are part of the same product family. Product families relevant to the serial number field are the following:

Import CSV: Select to upload a CSV file containing your device information.

  1. Select the device make.

If you enter serial numbers manually and ExtremeCloud IQ successfully maps the serial numbers to devices, then this field remains hidden. If ExtremeCloud IQ does not successfully map the serial numbers you entered, or if you are using a CSV file, then you must select the device make manually using the Device Make drop-down list:

  1. Select the device OS.

The contents of this field depend on the device make, and only the operating systems that the device supports appear in the list of options. For example, if you enter the serial number of an AP510C, then the OS options only include IQ Engine and WiNG operating systems. However, if you enter the serial number of a 5520 switch, then the options only include ExtremeXOS and VOSS operating systems.

  1. Assign the device location.

Select the floor from the Select Location pick list where this device is deployed, and then choose Select.

  1. Select Onboard Devices . You can continue to onboard additional devices, or you can select Finish.

Step 1: Add Devices

To add devices to ExtremeCloud IQ, do the following:

  1. Select Manage > Add > Advanced.
  2. Enter the device serial numbers in the text box labeled Extreme Networks - Aerohive serial numbers.
  3. If the device is a Dell device, select the Dell tab, enter the Dell service tag and serial number, and then select Next.

Step 2: Assign Locations (Optional)

If you do not want to assign device locations now, select Skip.

If you have already created locations in ExtremeCloud IQ, you can assign device locations here:

  1. Select Assign Location.
  2. Select the map to which you want the device to belong, and then select Assign.

Step 3: Assign Branch ID

If you are adding a router, then enter the Branch ID when prompted.

If you are adding a device that is not a router, then this step is automatically skipped.

Step 4: Create Network Policy (Optional)

You can create a network policy, choose an existing network policy to apply to the AP, or skip this step.

Note

Note

If you skip this step, the device can still connect to the ExtremeCloud IQ, but you must upload a configuration to the device later.

Step 5: Create Internal SSID

If a new network policy is needed, first create an internal SSID or skip this step if an internal SSID is not needed.

Please consult these guides regarding creating a PSK SSID (https://thehivecommunity.aerohive.com/s/article/PSK-SSID-How-To-

NG) (Secured Network) or an Open SSID (https://thehivecommunity.aerohive.com/s/article/How-To-Create-an-Open-SSID-in-HiveManager)for more configuration details.

Step 6: Create Guest SSID

Configure a Guest SSID, or skip this step if a Guest SSID is not needed

Step 7: Review Summary

Review the settings to ensure they are correct, and then select Finish.

Quick On-boarding

As an alternative, you can onbaord devices quickly if you need to create SSIDs. To perform a Quick Onboard, do the following:

  1. Select Monitor.
  2. Select Add
  3. Select Quick Add Devices
  4. In the menu now visible above the device inventory list on the monitor page, choose the following:

Device Type:

CSV: for importing serial numbers)

  1. Enter the serial number or device tag of the device to be added
  2. Choose a network policy or leave this drop down empty to apply no network policy to the device when it connects
  3. Select Add Devices.

Troubleshoot Issues

If a device fails to on-board, check the failure message displayed by selecting "Get Details":

Device is managed by another VHM

If the message “the device appears to be in use by another VHM” appears, contact support with the serial number of the device so they can remove any conflicting records for the device

Firewall ports

Confirm that the following ports are allowing outbound traffic:

AP isn't getting an IP address

Manually set the IP address and Default gateway

SSH in to the AP (https://thehivecommunity.aerohive.com/s/article/How-to-SSHin-

to-a-device-using-PuTTY)

Enter the following commands:

int mgt0 ip <ip_address>/<netmask>

ip route default gateway <ip_address>

DNS isn't working

If you are using an external DNS Ping 8.8.8.8 to confirm internet connectivity.

Ping google.com (http://google.com) to confirm DNS functionality.

If the ping to 8.8.8.8 was successful and the ping to google.com (http://google.com) failed, then the internet connection is working and the problem is DNS.

Set DNS Manually

SSH in to the AP (https://thehivecommunity.aerohive.com/s/article/How-to-SSHin-to-a-device-using-PuTTY)

Enter the following command:

dns server-ip <ip_address>

To see what the current DNS settings are:

show dns

It is also possible to check the DNS settings for the network policy by going to Configure> Open the Network Policy> Additional Settings> DNS Server (left hand side menu).

Update Firmware and IQ Agent for SR2200 and SR2300 Series

Switches

Establish an FTP server.

This is where the file that we are uploading to the switch will be placed.

Once this is done, we have two ways we can proceed, depending on whether Hive

Agent is already installed on the switch.

If Hive Agent is not already installed:

SSH in to the switch and run the following commands.

Where XXXXXX is, enter the filepath of where the file was uploaded on the FTP

server.

Commands:

(SR2208P-4) #copy tftp:// XXXXXX /hiveagent_pr nvram:application hiveagent_pr

(SR2208P-4) #copy tftp:// XXXXXX /hiveagent nvram:application hiveagent

(SR2208P-4) #copy tftp:// XXXXXX /ah_ha.conf nvram:application ah_ha.conf

(SR2208P-4) #configure

(SR2208P-4) (Config)#application install hiveagent start-on-boot

(SR2208P-4) (Config)# do reload

After the reload, hive agent is disabled, we need to re-enable it with the following

command:

(SR2208P-4) # application start hiveagent

If Hive Agent is already installed:

Use the following CLI to check and confirm the HiveAgent Version.

show hivemanager status

Note: If the HiveAgent Version is not 1.1.29.0 or later, then HiveAgent needs to be

upgraded.

Download the hiveagent 1.1.29 from the Hive Community portal

(thehivecommunity.aerohive.com (http://thehivecommunity.aerohive.com))

Upload the unzipped files to a ftp or tftp server

Use the following CLI to upgrade the hiveAgent on the switch.

enable

application stop hiveagent

copy tftp://x.x.x.x/HiveAgent_Aerohive_1.1.29/hiveagent_pr (ftp://x.x.x.x/HiveAgent_Aerohive_1.1.29/hiveagent_pr)

nvram:application hiveagent_pr

copy tftp:// x.x.x.x /HiveAgent_Aerohive_1.1.29/hiveagent_pr nvram:application hiveagent_pr_s

copy tftp:// x.x.x.x /HiveAgent_Aerohive_1.1.29/hiveagent nvram:application hiveagent

copy tftp:// x.x.x.x /HiveAgent_Aerohive_1.1.29/ah_ha.conf nvram:application ah_ha.conf

copy tftp:// x.x.x.x /HiveAgent_Aerohive_1.1.29/ah_ha.conf nvram:application ah_ha.conf_s

configure

application install hiveagent start-on-boot

Wait for about 30 seconds and then use the following CLI to check and confirm

that HiveAgent Version reads 1.1.29.0

show hivemanager status

Update IQEngine Firmware

Note: A HiveOS device needs to be on HiveOS 6.5r3 in order to work with HiveManager. If the device is on a firmware version older than

6.5r3, update the device firmware via the Web UI (https://thehivecommunity.aerohive.com/s/article/Upgrading-AP-firmware-via-web-

UI) or CLI (https://thehivecommunity.aerohive.com/s/article/Updating-HiveOS-from-CLI-using-SCP-TFTP-or-HTTP-s)of the device.

Go to Monitor> Select the check box next to the AP> Update Devices.

This will bring up a small window. Check the box next to “Upgrade HiveOS and

Aerohive Switch Images”.

There are two options available for updating HiveOS Firmware in HiveManager; the latest

version or a specific version you choose.

It is generally recommended that AP’s stay on the latest version.

You can check what the latest recommended version is here.

To add a specific file that isn’t the latest release, select “Upgrade to the specific version”, then select add/remove to add a file from the

local machine.
