Building Basic Stacks

A stack can be created in either of two ways:
  • Native stacking: using dedicated stacking connectors, usually located on the rear of the switch. These ports are called stacking ports.
  • Alternate stacking: using stacking-enabled 10-Gbps or 40-Gbps Ethernet data ports, either on the front of the switch or on option cards installed on the rear of the switch.

When planning and building your stack, be sure to follow port compatibility and cabling recommendations as described in this chapter.
