Smart RF Auto Sensor Settings

The following conditions must be met before you perform this procedure:

  • The device group must contain APs with a dedicated sensor radio. Supported models include AP410i/e, AP410C, AP460i/e, AP460C, AP4020, AP4020X, AP4020FX, AP4060, AP4060X, AP5022, AP5022FX, AP5022SD6, AP5060D, and AP5060U.
  • The device group RF Management policy must be set to Default Smart RF. Auto Sensor is not available with ACS RF policy.
  • An AirDefense profile with a valid ADSP server address must be configured and assigned to the device group. See AirDefense Profile Settings.

Use this procedure to configure Auto Sensor settings.

You can invoke the Smart RF Auto Sensor feature on eligible AP models either manually or automatically. You can choose the band over which the Neighbor Report collects its data. When the feature is invoked, ExtremeCloud IQ Controller automatically selects and manages sensor APs based on deployment density, with the goal of achieving a ratio of one sensor AP for every three data APs.

  1. Go to Configure > Sites.
  2. Select a site, then select the Device Groups tab.
  3. Select the device group that contains the APs to manage, or select Add to create a new device group.
  4. Next to RF Management, select the edit icon to open the Smart RF policy.
  5. Select the Auto Sensor tab and configure the following parameters.
Table 1. Smart RF Auto Sensor Parameters
    ParameterDescription
AlgorithmChoose the algorithm that best represents the selected device group deployment type. Options are:
    • Sparse (default) — This option is designed for large-cell deployments.

    • Dense — This option is designed for small-cell deployments.

BandSelect the band over which the neighbor report is to be collected. Options are:
    • 5GHz (default)

    • 2.4GHz
Note: If Select Shutdown is enabled, this option is not available.
    • 6GHz

TriggerChoose how the Auto Sensor is to be invoked. Options are:
    • Manual (default)

    • Auto

  6. Select the Enable Auto Sensor check box.

When enabled, ExtremeCloud IQ Controller automatically selects one AP to operate as a sensor for every three data APs in the site. The controller recalculates sensor selection hourly.

When disabled, sensor radios on eligible APs are not automatically activated by the Smart RF policy. Sensor mode can still be configured manually. See Radio as a Sensor.

  7. Select Save.

ExtremeCloud IQ Controller calculates sensor placement for the site based on current AP density. The initial sensor selection occurs within the first hourly recalculation cycle after the policy is saved. Selected sensor APs activate their dedicated sensor radio, which begins reporting wireless data to the configured ADSP server.

Note

Note

To verify which APs are currently acting as sensors, view the Auto Sensor status on the Site Monitoring page.

To disable Auto Sensor on a specific AP without disabling the feature for the entire device group, use the Advanced > Overrides dialog for the selected AP.
