Discovery and Registration

Wireless devices (APs and SA201 adapters) discover the IP address of ExtremeCloud IQ Controller using a sequence of mechanisms that allow for the possible services available on the enterprise network. The discovery process is successful when the AP/adapter successfully locates a controller to which it can register. Ensure that the appropriate services on your enterprise network are prepared to support the discovery process.

172.17.0.0/24
172.31.0.16/28

The ExtremeCloud IQ Controller user interface logic prevents adding addresses in these address ranges for VLAN interface references.

An access point can learn a hostname from a DHCP server. The AP reports either the discovered hostname, or an internally generated hostname (which is the AP serial number) to the controller as part of the discovery process.

If ExtremeCloud IQ Controller does not have a current record of the AP, the controller applies the reported hostname for use in the Name and Hostname fields for the AP.
If ExtremeCloud IQ Controller already has a record for the AP, then the controller ignores the reported hostname.
If the AP does not report a hostname to the controller as part of the discovery process, and there is no record of the AP on ExtremeCloud IQ Controller, then the name and hostname are generated.
