Each device that joins the Fabric Area Network (FAN) can automatically self-assign a random nickname from a fixed range. Automatic nicknames generate 10 seconds after the device joins the FAN. After the first IS-IS adjacency establishes, the device searches the network for a nickname server and if one is found, the device replaces the automatic nickname with the dynamic nickname assigned by the server.

The following considerations apply to automatic nickname assignment:

Automatic nicknames generate from the range F.F0.00-F.FF.FF.
Maximum of 4096 devices can acquire auto-nicknames.
Configure a dynamic nickname server outside of the auto-nickname range to prevent conflicts.
Automatic nickname behavior is always enabled unless the device has a configured static nickname.
