Geo Location Agent

Note

Note

Automatic Frequency Coordination (AFC) with Geo Location Agent is a BETA feature.

The geo location agent within ExtremeCloud IQ Controller provides location coordinates for AP consumption. The AP5020 uses the geo location coordinates to query the AFC server in the 6 GHz spectrum.

The following steps outline how the geo location agent derives the AP coordinates:
  1. The APs use 802.11mc Fine Time Measurement (FTM) technology to determine the distance between two APs, referred to as AP to AP ranging. The geo location agent collects the ranging results and builds a graph of APs on the floor. The graph edges are the estimated distances between the APs.

  2. Anchor APs are access points that are equipped with GPS modules. The geo location agent collects the GPS coordinates of the anchor APs and combines them with the FTM graph to derive the geo location coordinates. For an AP to be part of the graph, it has to have an equivalent range of at least three other APs. Anchor and Non-Anchor APs must be placed on the graph. A minimum of four Anchor APs must provide geo coordinates in order to place the graph and the geographic map from which the geo coordinates of each AP can be derived.

    Tip

    Tip

To lock on GPS signals, install anchor APs close to the building perimeter or outdoors. The indoor Anchor APs location must be chosen based on the GPS signal availability. Building properties determine the degree of shielding of the GPS signal. It is recommended to survey the GPS signal with a smart phone application such as GNSSLogger to determine the best Anchor AP position.
