Available Stacking Methods

Each ExtremeSwitching switch model can use various methods of stacking.

SummitStacking by Stacking Method shows the switch models that can participate in each stacking method.

Table 1. SummitStacking by Stacking Method
Stacking Method Speed per Link (HDX) Cable Type and Lengths Switch Models
SummitStack-V 10 Gbps 0.5 m - 40 km

SFP+ (with SR, LR, and ER)

ExtremeSwitching 5520 (using 5520-VIM-4X)
Note: The 5520 switches can stack with 5320 switches or 5420 switches by installing a 5520-VIM-4X into the 5520 switches.
SummitStack-V40 10 Gbps 0.5 m - 40 km

SFP+ (with SR, LR, and ER)

4220 (ports U1, U2)
Note: The 4220 switches can only stack with themselves.
ExtremeSwitching 5320
Note: The 5320 switches can stack with themselves, the 5420 or 5520 switches using 5520-VIM-4X ports.
5320-24T-4X-XT and 5320- 24T-24S-4XE-XT (ports U1, U2)
Note: 5320-24T-4X-XT and 5320- 24T-24S-4XE-XT switches can only stack with themselves.
ExtremeSwitching 5420 (ports U1, U2)
Note: The 5420 switches can stack with themselves, 5320 switches, or 5520 switches using 5520-VIM-4X ports.
SummitStack-V80 20 Gbps 0.5 m - 5 m SFP-DD ExtremeSwitching 5420 (ports U1, U2)
Note: The 5420 switches can stack with themselves and ExtremeSwitching 5520 (ports U1 and U2) when configured for SummitStack-V80.
SummitStack-V160 40 Gbps 0.5 m - 40 kM

QSFP+ only

ExtremeSwitching 5520 (ports U1, U2)
Note: If you use SummitStack-V160, 5520 switches can stack only with themselves. To stack with 5320 and 5420 switches, the 5520 can use either SummitStack-V80 on ports U1 and U2 or SummitStack-V on the alternate stack ports (Using a 5520-VIM-4X).
SummitStack-V200 50 Gbps 0.5 m - 5 m

QSFP28 only

4120 (ports U1, U2)
Note: The 4120 switches can only stack with themselves.
ExtremeSwitching 5520 (ports U1, U2)
Note: If you use SummitStack-V200, 5520 switches can stack only with themselves or 5720 switches.
SummitStack-V400 106 Gbps 0.5 m - 5 m

QSFP28 only

ExtremeSwitching 5720 (ports U1, U2), Extreme 7520 (ports 53/54 or 55/56), or 7720 (ports 31, 32)
Note: If you use SummitStack-V400, 5720 switches can only stack with themselves.
Note: No VIM ports can be configured as stack ports for 5720 switches.
Note: If you use SummitStack-V400, 7520 and 7720 switches can only stack with themselves.
SummitStack-V400 Alternative Configuration 100 Gbps V400 Alternative Configuration is required when using specific fiber cables. This mode sets the stack ports to 100G, enables pre-emphasis, and FEC (clause_91).
  • QSFP28 SR4
  • QSFP28 LR4
  • QSFP28 CWDM4
  • QSFP28 PSM4

  • QxQ AOC cable - 20m
ExtremeSwitching 5720 (ports U1, U2), Extreme 7520 (ports 53/54 or 55/56), or 7720 (ports 31, 32)
Note: If you use SummitStack-V400 Alternative Configuration, 5720 switches can only stack with themselves.
Note: No VIM ports can be configured as stack ports for 5720 switches.
Note: If you use SummitStack-V400 Alternative Configuration, 7520 and 7720 switches can only stack with themselves.

For more details about the stacking methods that are available for each switch series, see the hardware installation guide for your switch.

Note

Note

All switches in the stack must run the same version of ExtremeXOS.
