ExtremeXOS supports BFD monitoring of remote VTEPs (RTEPs). To verify the datapath used by the overlay traffic, BFD packets are VXLAN encapsulated between the VTEPs. Consequently, support for multi-hop BFD in the underlay network is not required.
In the context of the hardware_vtep schema, BFD monitoring of RTEPs can be managed using the Tunnel table. ExtremeXOS publishes a new row in this table whenever it learns of a new VTEP (Physical_Locator) from the controller. Unless requested by the OVSDB controller, a BFD session to the RTEP is not initiated. For more information, see the Hardware VTEP Schema, Version 1.3.
