Configure Simplified vIST in SMLT Topologies

This procedure shows how to configure Simplified vIST in an SMLT environment. It includes steps to configure the following:

  • Setting the boot config flag

  • Configuring the vIST peer

  • Enabling Simplified vIST

Important

Important

When you enable Simplified vIST with the virtual-ist enable command, two VLANs are automatically created to support vIST. The VLAN IDs are: 4086 and 4087.

Before you begin

SPBM must not be enabled on the vIST peers.

About this task

Important

Important

Do not change the system MTU to less than the default value of 1950 bytes. The system MTU must be 1950 or jumbo because of a header size increase.

Procedure

  1. In the navigation pane, expand Configuration > Edit > Chassis.
  2. Select the Boot Config tab.
  3. Clear EnableSpbmConfigMode to disable the boot flag.

    The system responds with the following messages:

    Warning: Please save the configuration and reboot the switch for this to take effect.

    Warning: Please carefully save your configuration file before rebooting the switch. Saving configuration file when spbm-config-mode is changed to disable, removes SPBM configurations from the configuration file.

  4. Select Apply.
  5. Save the configuration, and then reboot the switch.
    Important

    Important

    A change to the EnableSpbmConfigMode boot flag requires a reboot for the change to take effect.

  6. Configure the SMLT MLT:
    1. Expand Configuration > VLAN.
    2. Select MLT/LACP.
    3. Select the MultiLink/LACP Trunks tab.
    4. Select Insert.
    5. In Id, type the ID number of the MLT.
    6. In PortType, select access or trunk.
    7. In Name, type a name for the MLT, or accept the default.
    8. In PortMembers, select the ellipsis (...).
    9. In Port Editor: PortMembers dialog box, select the desired ports.
    10. Select Ok.
    11. In VlanIdList, select the ellipsis (...).
    12. In VlanIdList dialog box, select the desired VLANs.
    13. Select Ok.
    14. In MltType, select splitMLT
    15. Select Insert.

      The switch adds the SMLT MLT to the MultiLink/LACP Trunks tab in the MLT_LACP box.

  7. Configure the vIST MLT:
    1. Repeat steps 6.a to 6.o to configure the MLT.
    2. Select virtualIstMLT to enable Simplified vIST.
    3. Select Insert.
  8. Create the vIST VLAN:
    1. Expand Configuration > VLAN > VLANs.
    2. In Basic, select Insert.
    3. In Id, type an unused VLAN ID, or use the ID provided.
    4. In MstpInstance, select the down arrow, and then choose an MSTI instance from the list.
    5. In Type, select byPort.
    6. In PortMembers, select the ellipsis (...) .
    7. In Port Editor: PortMembers dialog box, select the desired ports.
    8. Select OK.
    9. Select Insert.
    10. Select the vIST VLAN from the list of VLANs, and then select IP.
    11. Select Insert.
    12. Configure the IP address for the vIST VLAN.
  9. Repeat step 8 to create an SMLT VLAN and assign the SMLT MLT ID to it. Do not use the vIST MLT ID.
