NetBIOS

Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS) is a program that allows applications on separate computers to communicate within a LAN. It is not supported on a WAN.

NetBIOS gives each computer a NetBIOS name and IP address that corresponds to a host name. This provides the session and transport services that are outlined in the OSI model.
